Tom Brant returns to Medicine Bow after 35 years in prison as an old broken man. His exploits have been expanded into mythic portions over the years first in a book and now by a St. Louis Courier reporter Ira Lom. He was involved in a shootout in the Medicine Bow saloon immortalized in a painting and retold by the bartender. Tom hopes to see his daughter Sarah Tedler who he has never met. She was raised by strangers and now married with a daughter and sick son. She has lived with the reputation of being an outlaw's daughter which has affected her and her family emotionally. Hedges receives $2500 for the herd but Hedges has fallen for a beautiful faro dealer, Alma Wilson. The Virginian is sent to Winton, Wyoming to purchase oats for Shiloh from a farmer who advertised in the Medicine Bow paper. As he arrives he observes three men beating up one man so he steps in to break it up. The man he helps provides directions to Frank Adams' farm where he meets Adams' wife Marie who is elated he wants the oats. After looking over the oats, The Virginian offers $300 for a thousand bushels delivered to the railroad which is reluctantly accepted by Adams. From there he goes to visit rancher Tom Hadley, a friend of Grainger. He walks into the middle of a war session where the ranchers are discussing how to fight the homesteaders. Trampas, Stacey, and Elizabeth are transporting a bull back to Shiloh on the Fourth of July from Silver Springs when they encounter a massive sand storm. They find a deserted homestead to take shelter in while waiting out the storm which luckily happens to have some supplies stored in it. While there others start showing up beginning with Marcus and Angela Van Owen who are on vacation but apparently got lost. Trampas recognizes the wife as as a crooked dealer he knew as Pearl from years back and her husband is the president of the local bank. Marcus dislocates his shoulder which Trampas is able to set. When the nervous bull knocks a hole in the wall, Trampas and Stacey discover gold coins hidden there. They wonder if meeting the Van Owens is an accident. Frank Hammel known as a gunman arrives on the stage in Medicine Bow shortly after The Virginian arrives in town. When the people of Medicine Bow learn of Hammel's arrival, many of the residents with skeletons in their closets believe he is after them. David Sutton quits Shiloh after he and Trampas have a run in. On the road David stops to help a young woman with an injured leg but finds himself robbed of his clothes and horse. Walking he spots a horse and clothes so he puts them on and rides to Buffalo Springs. The screams of a woman brings the Sheriff who arrests him for robbing the bank. His clothes, horse and height match one of the robbers. Trampas follows him to Buffalo Springs where he spots a man in the saloon in David's clothes. A fight breaks out landing Trampas in jail in the same cell with David. The real robbers are children of banker Nat Trumbull and saloon owner Imogene Delphinia who split the town. Josephine Delphinia hearing about David goes to the jail and with some cooperation from David has him released. An anthrax outbreak is killing Shiloh cattle and threatening the neighboring ranches. The neighbors are wanting to destroy the Shiloh cattle and burn the land to kill the outbreak. Grainger ordered a new vaccine for anthrax that is to arrive the next day. Walker, a bounty hunter, and his female prisoner Ruby show up at Shiloh looking for horses. The Virginian and Trampas are close to the Canadian border delivering cattle and forced to wait at the remote Inn of the Weary Trapper for payment. While trying to locate the inn, they encounter four French trappers who say they have never heard of the inn. They find the inn which is managed by an ex-Canadian Louis Boissevain in exile and a his fiancé Suzanne Mayo who scammed Trampas several years earlier for a large amount of money. Dan takes pictures of life on Shiloh while Jeremy uses their studio on the rail car to take pictures of local customers. Della Price's dressmaker suggests she have pictures taken. Jeremy shows the resulting pictures to Dan who realizes his old sweetheart Della is in Medicine Bow. She is a widow with a ranch caught in a bidding war between an oil speculator and the local ranchers who are afraid of the negative aspects of the oil industry. The primary source of water for the local ranches will be polluted if oil wells are allowed on her ranch. An injured cougar is killing calves on Shiloh so The Virginian sends Tramps to hunt the cougar. While hunting, Trampas encounters a lost and sick teenager who calls himself Seth. Trampas tends to him and adopts him as an assistant on the rest of the hunt. Although Seth stays with Trampas, he occasionally takes side trips unknown to Trampas.
